FINDING YOURSELF

Multi-Genre Collection

Dear Reader,

"Spend a little more time trying to make something of yourself and a little less time trying to impress people." -The Breakfast Club

My multi-genre study was an assortment of texts that all had the common theme of overcoming obstacles, a theme that I love to read about in books and watch in movies. To be fair, I wanted to select a different theme for my multi-genre collection so that I could look deeper into one of my other favourite themes. Discovering who I am is a common focus in my life at the moment due to being on the verge of graduating high school and having to decide what I plan on doing after that. That seemed to be a good enough push to to drive me to create six pieces about finding yourself.

Some of the books that I love the most, the books that sit on my shelf filled with dog-eared pages due to the plenty of times that I have read and re-read them, are books that just so happen to be centred around the major point of finding oneself. These beloved books of mine that have to be mentioned are The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, Every Day by David Levithan, and my personal favourite, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. Oh, and it definitely isn’t just the books about finding yourself that I come back to time and again. Watching movies is a family tradition which is needless to say that I’ve seen just about every movie under the sun. The most inspiring of movies with this theme are It’s Kind of a Funny Story, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and I can’t leave out The Lion King, it’s a really great self-discovery Disney movie.

It was a pleasure to do this multi-genre collection. It’s not every day that I spend a day painting a canvas, interviewing people about such a deep topic, or creating a short story that I can’t help but be proud of. This project gave me the excuse that I needed to express myself and think about what life is really about.
